Institution and Lab Description
Dr. Kang Chen’s research group ( in the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development ( and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology ( at Wayne State University School of Medicine is seeking an energetic and motivated Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate to lead projects of immunology and antibody discovery.
The C.S. Mott Center is internationally recognized for research and education focused on women and children’s health. The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is a national leader in reproductive care, with physicians and scientists ranking among the best in the country.
The Chen lab investigates immune system function in infection, reproductive and cancer using animal models and clinical specimens. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and interdisciplinary team of basic scientists and clinicians in scientific discovery and the daily operations of a research laboratory. Many of the Chen lab’s trainees have gone on to successful careers in academia, the healthcare sector, and the biopharmaceutical industry.
Preferred Qualifications
● Education or work experience
o A doctoral, master’s or bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience in antibody therapeutics industry
o Or a recent (or near completion) Ph.D. degree in immunology, biochemistry and cell/molecular biology, or a related field in life sciences
● Integrity and scientific skills
o Professionalism and integrity for scientific inquiry
o Good English communication skill
o Good task organization and data management skills
o Sharp attention to detail, analytical, computational and record-keeping skills
● Hands-on technical experience
o Biochemistry, molecular and cell biology – gene editing/cloning/expression, protein expression/purification/detection/analysis, conventional and high-dimensional multi-omics analysis, basic knowledge and skills of bioinformatics
o Immunology – conventional and high-dimensional flow cytometry for cell analysis and sorting, tissue staining
o Mice – colony maintenance, genotyping, drug administration, cell transfer, blood/tissue collection/processing, basic surgical procedures, immune disease models
● Learning and growth
o Motivated to apply experience to learn and implement new techniques and experiments and solve complex technical problems
o Actively seeks to acquire new knowledge, skills and broaden expertise
Principal Responsibilities
● Lead and contribute to projects on antibody discovery and biochemical, computational and functional characterization
● Maintain mouse colonies and ensure compliance
● Maintain accurate experimental records
● Assist with laboratory management and operations
● Perform other related duties as needed
● Contribute to the educational and research environment of Wayne State University
