Job Description

SUMMARY:

Experienced, qualified, and dependable Class A or B truck drivers work closely with our landscape construction team. In this role, you will be responsible for transporting, loading, and unloading equipment, hard goods, and plant material, ensuring all deliveries are accurate, secure, and handled safely. You will perform routine safety checks on vehicles and equipment, confirm that all components are operating properly, and promptly report any issues to Summerhill’s in-house mechanic.

This position requires an efficient, accountable professional with a clean driving record. Summerhill operates a fleet of new and well-maintained trucks, primarily equipped with automatic transmissions, and takes great pride in the appearance and cleanliness of our vehicles. Driving is local and primarily within Suffolk County.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely operate and drive assigned delivery vehicles in accordance with company and regulatory standards
  • Operate vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs, including air-brake systems
  • Drive tractor-trailers and tag trailers as required under Class A CDL
  • Ensure trailer hitches are properly and securely attached to tractor units
  • Secure all cargo within trucks or trailers to prevent damage or breakage
  • Assist Summerhill team members with safe and efficient loading and unloading
  • Plan and follow delivery routes using GPS to ensure timely pickups and deliveries
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, clients, and suppliers as needed
  • Possess basic written and spoken English skills
  • Plant knowledge is beneficial but not required
  • Verify shipment contents against order documentation and report any discrepancies or damages to the main office
  • Notify management of any significant vehicle maintenance, delivery, or pickup issues
  • Conduct vehicle inspections before and after each trip
  • Review weather conditions and road reports prior to departure
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure required safety equipment is onboard
  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance (fueling, tire pressure checks, minor repairs, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate driving and delivery logs
  • Track and report working hours when time-clock access is unavailable
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and handbook guidelines
  • Comply with all traffic laws and adjust driving for weather and road conditions, including local weight and height restrictions
  • Comply with all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Always prioritize safety

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Class A or B CDL required
  • Clean driving record with no moving violations
  • Ability to report to East Hampton before 7:00 AM, Monday through Friday; Saturdays required during peak season
  • Ability to work shifts of up to 12 hours
  • Experience operating trucks equipped with Allison and Eaton Fuller transmissions
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening
  • Skilled, confident, and safety-focused driver
  • Comfortable maneuvering and parking tractor-trailers
  • Alert, detail-oriented, and able to remain focused for extended periods
  • Dependable, disciplined, and resourceful
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs as needed
  • Ability to operate basic landscape equipment, including skid steers, excavators, and wheel loaders
  • Proficient with GPS and routing systems; strong sense of direction
  • Always Represent Summerhill Landscapes professionally with strong composure and stress management skills

Physical demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception
